Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I choose Border Lakes Tours for our trip?

It's simple.  We have the best equipment for your paddling enjoyment, the best safety gear (just in case...), and the  most experienced  & friendly guides -  who love sharing VERY special places with others.   We tailor the trip to YOU versus expecting you to fit into our plan.   Check out Trip Advisor  and our Testimonials to get a better taste of what we offer.

We don't strive to meet expectations - we aim to EXCEED expectations with every trip we take.

Is Border Lakes Tour Company insured?

Border Lakes Tour Company is fully insured and operates under the authority of a Special Use Permit issued by the US Forest Service, Gunflint Ranger District.

How safe are the tours?

There is an inherent danger in all outdoor activities.  However by following your guide's instructions, the risks are very low.  As is customary for  most outfitters, each participant must sign a liability waiver prior to trip departure.

Additionally, all participants will be required to wear a USCG approved personal flotation device (provided) at all times when on the water.

What if there is an emergency?

Cellphone coverage is spotty in the wilderness.  Your guide will be carrying a satellite based communication device should an emergency arise.

Additionally, your guide is trained in wilderness first aid and carries a first aid kit.

What about bears and other wild animals?

We view wildlife from a healthy distance and we respect their space and territory.  Follow your guide's instructions.

Do I need a passport?

On certain trips we may be looking into Canada or even be paddling in Canadian waters on the border route but we will not be setting foot in Canada.

Passports are not required.

What do I need to bring?

A list of recommended items to bring is here.

Will our guide take us fishing?

While these tours are not technically "guided fishing trips", you are welcome to fish on the tour if you provide your own fishing gear.  You will be required to have a current Minnesota fishing license and adhere to Minnesota fishing regulations.

Can we bring alcohol?

Alcohol and other drug use are not allowed on the tours.

Will I have to carry my canoe across a portage?

Your guide will certainly allow you to portage the canoe, however, the guide will also be happy to portage the canoe for you and that is what we usually do!
